Sohan Dass Swings East Bank In EACA Semi-Final
August 4th, 2008
Last Sunday, East Bank clashed with Atlantis, as both teams were tied for third-place in the Eastern American Cricket Association’s 40-overs competition, at Lido beach.
East Bank winning the toss and electing to take first strike on a typically slow Lido Beach outfield, did not get off to a great start, as the first wicket fell at 26 runs, but Debo Sankar, surviving dismissal by way of a dropped catch, before scoring, held the top order together, scoring 55 runs off 70 deliveries with wickets falling at regular intervals.
East Bank progressed steadily towards 139 off 32 overs for the loss 7 wickets. due to some consistent bowling from Atlantis. However, an eight-wicket partnership of 63 runs off 48 deliveries by the veterans Deryck Kallicharran and Royo Sankar, each with 27 not out. That partnership saw East bank go past the 200-run mark, finally reaching 202 off the allotted 40 overs.
In reply, Atlantis was off to a disastrous start, losing their first wicket, that of Nigel Harper to the first ball of the inning, due to some very impressive bowling by national pacer Thelston Johnson who was almost unplayable at times. His efforts were backed up by East Bank’s other pacer Tegana McKenzie. A third-wicket partnership of 62 by Swanston Benjamin, 28 and Marlon. Kallicharran, 46, briefly injected some life into the Atlantis inning.
Atlantis slowly inched
toward East Bank’s total, however, the loss of Benjamin, smartly
stumped by Debo Sankar off the bowling of Deryck Kallicharran, saw
the decline of the Atlantis batting line-up. Another East Bank veteran
Sohan Dass took the old ball and tore away at the Atlantis middle-order,
taking five wickets for 12 runs of five overs. Desmond Thompson, 24,
and Cuthbert Mendonca, 16, were the only other Atlantis batsmen to
reach double figures, as Atlantis were all out for 159 off 34 overs.
