York Softball Cricket League
New York Softball Cricket 3 Days Extravaganza By James Persaud July 1st, 2009 Just about this time of the year, the New York softball cricket arena takes on an invasion of cricket stars and cricket enthusiastic fans from far north as Canada and far south as Guyana. The New York Softball Cricket League has led the way in this Inter State tournament, which later attracted teams from outside of the USA. As the Independence Cup tournament grows the organizers had to a find new and improved venue to host the event, for the 2009 tournament, for the first time the finals will be played in a professional cricket facility (hard ball field and pitch) at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.
This year the competition looked even more challenging as the eight teams in the all-star Independence Cup looked very competitive with all the best players around finding themselves on each team’s roster. The defending champions will be hard pressed to retaining their title, but this NYSCL team must be given the edge after winning the Florida Cup four months ago. The NYSCL team led by star batsman Kris Shobai has assured the league the cup (eagle) is theirs to keep. The Tri State Dream team, Guyana All-Star, South Florida, Canada, New York Muslin League, Queens All-Stars and newcomer Caracas All-Stars and the rest of the teams will all be looking to capture the eagle as well. Then for the guys looking over the hill, so to speak ……there is the Legends Cup (over 45 years) tournament. The 2008 defending champions Better Hope All-Stars will be looking for a repeat. But the NYSCL Legends will be looking to change this since they were the runner up in the last tournament and also runner up in Florida. The team coming from South Florida for this competition always gives a good show, but this writer feels the team to look out for this year is the newcomers Brooklyn All-Stars. This is a three
day event as the teams will be playing two games on Friday and Saturday
to get qualified and the grand finals on Sunday July 5th 2009 with
the two semi-finals winner from Saturday afternoon. |
