Javid Salim Blasts Sunrise Into The Finals

By James Persaud
June 13th, 2008
Lightening coming into the semi finals undefeated after eight games and leading the division two, must have felt more confident winning the toss and asked Sunrise to bat. Sunrise sent Derek Basdeo and Ryan Ramjas to open their inning, with six runs on the board Sunrise lost its first wicket; Ryan was bowled by C. Sahadeo. The Sunrise former captain and most senior player, the dependable batsman Sasenarine joined Derrick who was batting well and seemed set for a huge score but with his total on 31 he was caught off the bowling of T. Chinapen. Fourteen runs later Sunrise lost another wicket.

Avinash the next batsman tries to move the score along at a steady rate but attempting to steal a single he was run out for a good knock of 24. Sasenarine continued his magnificent batting form and made an unblemished 40 with three sixes and four fours before he was caught off the bowling of I. Chinapen. The onslaught continued as Javid tore apart the bowling of Lightening. In his short stay at the crease he amassed a score of 74 runs with 10 sixes and one four. He belted the ball to all parts off the park and was more severe to the mid on boundary. He seemed set for a ton but with 3 overs remaining he tries to reach the boundary one more time and caught at deep mid wicket. He was exhausted from the heat and the little energy he had left was enough to get him back to the pavilion. Deonarine Singh and Vasquez also contributed 21 and 10 respectively. Sunrise amassed a total of 226 for the lost off 8 wickets in their allotted 25 overs. In the bowling department for Lightening T. Chinapen was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 30 runs.

By all account this total seemed huge for Lightening, the Sunrise players had a long team meeting before taking the field. Lightening knew and believes that this score was within their reach. The opening batsman tries to push the score along and did a good job keeping within the required run rate. Nevertheless Lightening could only manage to reach 217 at the end off the 25 over for the lost off 7 wickets. I. Chinapen top score with 79, S. Mangru 37 and J. Mohabir 25.
Bowling for Sunrise Stanley took 3 wickets for 38 and Derrick 2 for 39 runs. The Sunrise bowlers stuck to their task off just getting the overs finish, bowling very deftly as Lightening made a last daring effort to reach their target. The game was exciting and provided much excitement for the players, spectators and everyone else in the park.
