Bobby Rupie - Inaugural Memorial
20/20 Champion of Champions Cricket Spectacular

The Bobby Rupie Inaugural Memorial 20/20 Champion of Champions Cricket Spectacular was played last weekend under the watchful eyes of the West Indian Softball Association (WISA) and its supporters and organizers. It was the first of what will become an annual event in honor of the late Mr. Ganpat Rupie (Bobby) who passed away on September 11, 2008.

The executive at WISA devised a unique format in which all six of its division 20/20 2008 champions were involved in the tribute to Mr. Rupie. The division champions in Premier Elite, Elite, Divisions; I, II, III & IV were paired and played in the following fixtures. Premier Elite (Cornered Tigers) vs. Premier (Hurricanes). Division I (DFI) vs. Division II (Primetime). Division III (Queens United) vs. Division IV (Young Guns II).

In the first fixture at Charles Drew Park, Cornered Tigers beat Hurricanes by 25 runs in the in the Tier I 20/20 Bobby Rupie Inaugural Memorial Cricket Spectacular. Cornered Tigers batted first and were bowled out for 118. Asif Samad top scored with 28. He was supported by Z. Samad with 21. Hurricanes replied with 93 all out. Z. Samad took 4 for 15.

In fixture number 2, DFI beat Primetime by 12 runs in the Tier II 20/20 Bobby Rupie Inaugural Memorial Cricket Spectacular. DFI took first strike and made 138 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Asgar Khan and Arnold made 29 and 21 respectively. Chumadat grabbed four wickets for sixteen runs. Primetime replied with 126 all out. Arnold bagged 4 for 26.

In the third fixture, Young Guns II beat Queens United by 17 runs in the in the Tier III 20/20 Bobby Rupie Inaugural Memorial Cricket Spectacular. Young Guns II batted first and rattled up a score of 138. Willis Newland top scored with 65. Wazir took 4 for 19. Queens United replied with 121 all out. Willis Newland turned in a fine all around performance with 4 for 28.

After the games, a presentation and award ceremony took place to recognize the organizers, players and umpires of the event.

In the Tier I game, trophies were given to the following: Asif Samad – best batsman, Z. Samad, best bowler and man-of-the-match.

In the Tier II game, trophies were given to the following: Asgar Khan – best batsman, Chumadat - best bowler and Arnold - man-of-the-match.

In the Tier III game, trophies were given to the following: Willis Newland – best batsman man-of-the-match. Wazir - best bowler.

The participating umpires; Cecil Singh, Jairam Bissessar, S. Churman and J. West received a plaque each in appreciation for their involvement.

According to WISA, Roy Mohabir, Dasrat Sookraj, M. Singh and Willis Newland were all recognized with plaques for their organizing efforts for the event. A special thank you goes out to Roy Mohabir for going the extra mile towards making this event a success.

The second Bobby Rupie Memorial 20/20 Champion of Champions Cricket Spectacular will be held in 2009 after the WISA 20/20 competition is completed.
