It was very heartening to learn that two of Atlantis’ current
main stay players Lennox Cush and William Perkins have been named
to the Sir Allen Stanford Super Stars Twenty20 squad, to compete in
the “US$20M Winner-Takes-All” match against England this
November in Antigua.

Cush has been
an outstanding player for Guyana in the two Stanford Twenty20 tournaments
held so far, capturing a hat-trick in that country’s loss to
Jamaica in the semi-final, earlier this year. The 22-year old William
Perkins has been the most recent addition to the West Indies’
Twenty20 roster and made his debut in the West Indies victory against
the fiery Australian bowling attack last month in Barbados.
The two Eastern American Cricket Association players are part of a
32-man squad announced and scheduled to start training in a couple
of months. The squad also includes West Indies Captain Chris Gayle,
Vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and regulars Shiv Chanderpaul, Dwayne
Bravo, Jerome Taylor, Denesh Ramdin, Daren Powell, Sulieman Benn,
Xavier Marshall, Darren Sammy, Andre Fletcher, and Kieron Pollard.
It is expected that the final squad will be selected shortly before
the match on November 1, this year.
According to Sir Vivian Richards, the legendary former West Indies
batsman and Stanford Chairman of selectors, "This is a squad
of the best performers in the two editions of the Stanford 20/20 Tournament
we've had so far and the best players in the region, it was a difficult
task to select the top 32 but our selection panel believes that these
players will provide us with the firepower and all the other resources
to prevail over England in what is the richest prize in team sport
history."
Sir Viv added "The difficult task of further reducing this training
group to the playing squad lies ahead, so we will have to pay keen
attention to how the players cope in the training camps which will
be held in Antigua in the coming months."
Former Antigua and Barbuda and West Indies player Eldine Baptiste
has been appointed head coach of the Stanford Superstars squad with
Roger Harper, the former West Indies and Kenya coach as his assistant,
along with Anguilla coach Cardigan Connor.
