According to USACA’s 2nd Vice President and Director of Cricket Operations Sheikh Manaf Mohamed, “…the squad is a blend of experienced players and some relative newcomers to the sport.” He added, “The USA is looking to use this tournament as a vehicle for attracting younger female cricketers to the sport, now making its international debut, here at home.”

USACA’s new CEO Don Lockerbie, while congratulating the ladies, he emphasized that, “The full complement of the team would represent the USA very well.”

The team was selected following a domestic Conference tournament in Lauderhill, Florida, at the end of March, a tournament that saw some of the ladies donning cricket gear for the very first time in a competitive environment. Other nations participating in the upcoming ICC Americas tournament are Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Team USA will include two American-born players, Sandra Ibarra and 15-year old Sonakshi Sagar, an off-spinner, both of whom were recently introduced to the sport of cricket. It is hoped that the blend of experienced players, some with Women’s Test match experience, and the enthusiasm of the younger players selected, augurs well for the future of the sport in America.
