Cosmos- A Year In Review

And so cricket balls stopped rolling, the matting was folded and stacked away, Christmas bells started ringing, bringing peace, joy and goodwill to all; signifying the end is here for yet another year and a quarter century not out for Cosmos Cricket Club. It is a milestone that few teams have ever achieved before. At times you soar like an eagle, and at other times you simply ride with the tide in the name of a game.

Who would have surmised that all the minutiae and trials of organizing, which clubs accede to, would have such very little adverse impact on the club’s overall structure. Cosmos did not to melt away like winter's snow, but sprung to life-like morning dew on rose petals, clearing enough snow and creating a playable track year after year to keep the leather and willow prim and proper. That, however, required a healthy dose of dedication and a constant psychological assessment of human behavior wrapped together with about three hooded sweatshirts, two wind-breakers, two sweat pants, a lesser appreciated pair of sneakers and some cricket equipment that aches the heart to use in cold damp weather. One has to be either committed or just fanatical. Whatever the reasons, many have tried and failed, Cosmos though has persevered and in their twenty-five years, it required a still tongue at times, a clear vision, an unwavering will during adversity and an appreciative nod in the happy times.

The 2007 season marked twenty-five years for Cosmos and it has been especially good. Cosmos rewrote the record books in the Metropolitan Cricket League (MCL), one record after another - highest team score, highest individual score, highest partnership, most centuries - on their way to securing a semi final spot in both playoffs. The annual Memorial Day tour to Hartford, Connecticut added to a successful season as Cosmos regained the prestigious Slim Sutherland Memorial trophy. Then it was the family weekend in July, which brought refreshing activity variety to the club, commencing with an Atlantic City trip on Saturday, and then an anniversary double-wicket match on Sunday, where members flexed their arms and tapped their feet to a different tune. Cosmos was then off to their Labor Day tour to Ft. Lauderdale for some fun in the sun.

The cricket season concluded with a last ball thriller in the MCL Challenge Cup final and then it was the finale as Cosmos closed the year 2007 by commemorating their 25th anniversary. It was a gala celebration depicting an epic journey through two and a half glorious decades and the legacy of a club whose innocence of youth in 1978 gave birth to an enterprising Cosmos in 1983. Cosmos has matured throughout the years to become one of the most vibrant and progressive organizations in the United States, which further attested that Cosmos has unequivocally, and perhaps unwittingly, ascribed to cricket’s pristine culture.

Cosmos’ diversity and vision will serve to maintain the good qualities and permanence of the club and will ensure that the continuity of the game is protected. It is with sincere appreciation to the many members who have contributed to the success of Cosmos and have dared to venture where few have gone before. Cosmos did it their way and are forever grateful!
