Recently two teams comprising Guyanese players of the Eastern American Cricket Association league and Trinidadians from Nassau Cricket League tackled each other at Baisley Oval in a friendly Twenty/20 encounter on Saturday October 6.

The Guyanese squad comprised the likes of Marlon Kallicharran, Telston Johnson, the two Mark Gomeses, Freddie Roopchan, Kumar Nandalall and Shiv Ragubar while Trinidad included S. Mohan, T. Jaggernath, Kerry A. Roopnarine and A. Silochan.

Trinidad was off to a good start after winning the toss and electing to bat on a beautiful sunny day. Openers S. Mohan and Jaggernath put on 39 runs for the first wicket, before the latter was bowled by Johnson for 19 which included two sixes and a four. S. Mohan was the better of the two batsmen, hitting the ball around the park as you would see in any Twenty/20 game. Mohan was severe on pacer Johnson who was guilty of bowling short.

Mohan eventually retired hurt for 58 which included two sixes and seven fours. Roopnarine and Kerry were the other batsmen among the runs with the former scoring 23 and Kerry with 24 which had two sixes.

Trinidad’s innings came to an end at 154 runs in their allotted 20 overs for the lost of eight wickets which included three retiring hurt.

Trinidad wickets fell at 39, 46, 64, 104 and 130.

The most successful bowler for Guyana were Dereck McDonald and Mark Gomes who both finished with 2 for 20.

Guyana opened with veteran Kallicharran and hard hitting Freddie Roopchan but was in trouble in the first over.

F. Roopchan was brilliantly caught for one and Kallicharran was run out from a direct throw for 11 that included a six and a four.

Former Guyana Under-15 captain and current Guyana/NY all-rounder Karan Ganesh strode to the wicket and was joined by Mark Gomes. Ganesh was the more aggressive of the two and delighted the small crowd with shots all over the park. They added 34 and put some stability in the Guyana innings before Gomes was run out for 15.

The other Gomes joined K. Ganesh but didn’t last long, going caught for three off the bowling of K. Khan who had claimed two of the four wickets that fell.

K. Ganesh was then joined by fellow all-rounder Shiv Ragubar but their partnership didn’t rally that long, with the latter being superbly caught at long leg for 9.

Another former Guyana Under-19 player and veteran McDonald took the crease and added 24 with Ganesh before he was caught for a delightful 45 which included two sixes and three fours.

At that stage Guyana was 107 with six wickets, needing another 47 runs from seven overs.

Left-arm spinner Nandalall, another ex Guyana U-19 player then joined McDonald. The pair batted elegantly, stroking the ball around the park. They added 36 before retiring which allowed captain T. Johnson and Gilly to have a bat. Johnson finished the game in fine style by hitting a six and four to see Guyana to victory.
