Edged Cosmos In An Epic Thriller
By Sham Ali (COSMOS: Celebrating 25th Anniversary) – You take the rough with the smooth if you give your heart to cricket. For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, it's a lifelong commitment that demands steadfastness in adversity and a healthy appreciation of the good times, when they deign to make an appearance. On days such as last Sunday at Floyd Bennett, it requires a doctorate in psychology to understand the full gamut of emotions that your average cricketer is subjected to when the curtains came down on the Metropolitan Cricket League 2007 season, in a most thrilling and electrifying finale in the Roy Sweeney Challenge Cup. It came down to the last ball of the last over with the defending champions Cosmos needed just two runs to win and Westbury one dot ball to secure their second trophy. The crowd on hand got the match-up which they had bargained for all season-a Cosmos /Westbury clash. This final swung like pendulum from the very first over to the last on a pitch that had some life in it with quite a bit for both batsmen and bowlers. Westbury, after sent in to bat, got off to an inauspicious start when Sham Ali clipped the edge of Donald Bennett's bat with his third ball of the match and then had Cliff Roye fanning to point. Linden St. Louis in his first over removed Robert Henriques caught at the wicket and then had former Jamaica batsman Wayne Cuff trapped lbw. Cosmos had scalped four
of Westbury's batsmen in only four overs and were looking to make
further inroads into the opposition's lineup. They gave up a crucial
chance to Devon Campbell when he lobbed the ball over the bowler's
head where four fielders converged, a communication disaster ensued
as they stood and watched the ball fall in the middle. Cosmos paid
dearly as Campbell went on to score an important 59 runs. Too often
was Westbury allowed to score too easily. They took full advantage
of the opportunities and fought their way back into the match after
being 30 for 4, then 112 for 6, to recover to a fighting 181 all out
in the 35th over. At the interval, Cosmos had put themselves in a good position in this final match with their innings at 90 for 2 in the fifteenth over. The match would swing yet again as Cosmos lost four wickets for34 runs in the next eleven overs. Paul Cluff was caught behind driving loosely outside off stump, Woolcock gloved to slip. Dennison Thomas lbw to a slow full toss and Dixeth Palmer was given not out for a caught behind appeal and then out about six seconds later. It was extraordinary happenings perhaps orchestrated, as Cosmos was again the victim of several highly dubious umpire decisions in this match and throughout the playoffs. Shafiq Jadavji entered
this match with a 'heavy heart” after loosing his father only
seventeen hours ago. He responded like a champion, which would have
made his best friend very proud of his son. He took his team to the
brink of victory with a steely 46 runs not out. With one ball remaining
and two runs to win and Shafiq on strike, he succeeded in playing
the ball back to the bowler. Cosmos even in the agony of the defeat,
applauded their player Shafiq Jadavji - a seasoned campaigner- for
his gritty performance at one of the most testing of times for him.
Cosmos president Sham Ali remarked that, 'Cosmos has been a highly
competitive team over the years… today’s final slipped
away. To be fearless enough to give the younger players a chance in
this final match is an opportunity and experience that is invaluable.'
Westbury took the championship victory in this match and Cosmos the
honors of coining another breathtaking final in celebrating twenty-five
glorious years of cricket. Join Cosmos at their awards ceremony on
