The newly constituted New York Regional Cricket committee dropped a few bombshells in its selection of the team to contest the National championship Eastern Conference playoffs set to bowl off next weekend.

The 14-man squad will has regular captain Steve Massiah, but a number of new faces have resurfaced in a recycling of a squad that could’ve been better off with a few more young players.

Former captain Richard Staple who had announced his resignation from competitive cricket a few years ago, is back in the 14. And most surprisingly too is Imran Iwan, the Atlantic Region fast bowler, who has never played for any other Region.

Also Kester Sylvester who made his debut for the Windward Islands in the West Indies Regional competition ages ago has made the cut.

Not only is he an unlikely pick, but the batsman is the new vice captain, taking over from Lennox Cush who was appointed last year and was also Massiah’s deputy on the United States team which got knocked out of the 2011 World Cup preliminaries last month.

Cush has maintained his place but leading all rounder Orlando Baker is out of it along with opening batsman Carl Wright.

It is not known whether the players, who were picked for last year’s competition and also for the United States this year, are available.

No one was available from the New York selection committee to throw light on the two omissions as well as that of long serving fast bowler Steve Pitter, also overlooked.

New York director Jeffroy Morrishaw said the names of the selected players were submitted by the various leagues. But he did not have the information on hand on Iwan’s nomination, yesterday.

However, news out of New Jersey suggests that the Pakistan born paceman is in the plans of Atlantic Region this year as he has been since the competition started in 2003.

Former New York under-19 wicketkeeper batsman Akeem Dodson has made the cut and along with Dwayne Smith, but there are no other youngsters out of the junior ranks in the 14.

Gregory Sewdial, the 2007 national junior championships Most valuable Player is in the standby list as well as pacer Dominic Audain as well as Karan Ganesh, all youngsters deserving instant promotion. Nicholas Stanford, another young promising batsman available for New York, is not even among the reserves.

New York will clash with Atlantic, Florida ( South East) and Connecticut ( North East) in round robin competition with the top two teams advancing to the National finals.

The games are scheduled for the 108th Street Seaview ground and Van Cortlandt Park from July 4-6th.

New York squad: Steve Massiah (captain), Kester Sylvester (vice captain), Lennox Cush, George Adams, Barrington Barthley, Telston Johnson, Dennison Thomas, Richard Staple, Akeem Dodson, Imran Iwan, Kumar Nandalall, Dwayne Smith, Mikhail Miller and Dennis Evans.

The coach is Sew Shivnarine and manager Austin Hutchinson.

Standbys: Gregory Sewdial, Dominic Audain, Karran Ganesh and Theron Blair.
