Texas (Central West Region) sounded a warning by whipping Southern California (West Coast South) by five wickets to establish themselves as favorites in the Western Conference where Northern California (West Coast North) also won comfortably in round one games Friday.

Texas unleashed a batsman of pure class in Ryan Corns who stroked a magnificent 97 which highlighted a five- wicket victory over Southern California at the 88th Street Seaview ground. Corns, a born American proved himself the batsman to watch as he scored almost half of his team’s total of 204 runs for five wickets, replying to 200 all out in 49.2 overs managed by Southern California.

Taking first strike Southern California found the going tough against a well organized Texas attack, and were eventually restricted well short of their 50 overs allotment. Salman Ahmad topscored with a fine 59 while Nitesh Anandan supported with 38. Kartick Vitalla led an impressive bowling display for Southern California, capturing four wickets for 44 runs while Chirac Bhakta chipped in with 2-51.

The stage was then set for Texas’ Corns who hit the ball to all parts of the ground to rattle up the tournament’s highest score so far. In trying to hit a six in the final over for his century he was eventually caught in the deep. Basit Udal was the next best scorer with 36.

At the 108th Street Seaview ground, Northern California (West Coast North) crushed Michigan (Central East) by eight wickets, due mainly to a fine bowling display by Saleem Saqib. Batting Michigan were bundled out for 198 as Saqib proved too much for the batsmen, bagging 4-35 with his leg spin. Hermandeep Kumar took 3-36 and Gautam Gaulati with 2-32 proved too much for Michigan’s batsmen.

In reply Northern California rattled up 199-2 in 32.1 overs led by Zukfikl Nana who scorched the bowling by slamming an impressive 81. Vinay Suri added salt to the wounds of Michigan by stroking an impressive 50.

In Saturday’s games Northern California will take on Southern California at 88th Street and Texas will face Michigan at Gateway.
