USA Guyana’s Tour Was A Worthy Exercise

By Orin Davidson
The intention was to build a solid foundation for a strong relationship with Guyana which the USA Guyana team’s tour easily achieved thanks to mainly the generosity of Ed Ahmad, the biggest supporter of the event.

No one expected USA Guyana to win the three match series which is why the G$2 million in winning prize money went a long way towards having the Guyana authorities make the planned annual event, one of its priorities for the years ahead.

With money also being at stake for the runner-up team, the series by far was the most lucrative in the history of competition in Guyana.
Guyana pulled out all the stops to romp home 3-0 winners, giving its players and officials the opportunity to laugh all the way to the bank, at no better an opportune time than the festive Christmas season.

As a result local players should be even more eager than the Guyana Cricket Board officials to partake in the competition in the future

Ahmad said he hopes to make it a home and away tie which if it materializes could take the USA Guyana team to playing levels much higher than thought of four years ago when the Ahmad Caribbean Cup was inaugurated..

In light of the increasingly big incentives at stake in the country, now that the multi million dollar Stanford Cup has been made an accepted feature of the West Indies Cricket Board’s season, and those already in existence for winning selection on the West Indies team, the USA Guyana versus Guyana series should ignite the necessary interest among young people, everyone though has been disappearing.

Ed Ahmad is once again in the forefront of triggering a revolution in cricket, as his contribution to making the Caribbean Cup, the best known domestic competition in the United States, did.

As a Guyanese he is a true of example of extolling the virtues of Charity beginning at home.

And let’s not forget the Guyana Cricket Inc committee which did all the leg work in making the series a reality. They deserve just as much kudos too.

Obviously the money would make the competition a hit with Guyana players, and surely it could follow suit with fans.

You can expect therefore to attract a greater following in the future.

Cynics might argue that the proliferation of more money into Guyana’s cricket could trigger more negligence from players who are automatic national team selectees, into not working harder to better their game, and continue having an easy time in acquiring comfortable earnings.

It has happened in the past is happening now. As a result it is now up to the Guyana administrators to play their part now in dealing with players harshly for negligence.

Ahmad has done his part as a sponsor and supporter in New York and now Guyana.

The ball is now in the Guyana administrators court to make players fully earn their keep, by infusing more discipline in players’ approach to the game.

The times of easy team selection because of names should be a practice of the past from now onwards.
