Strong Guyana Team To Test Massiah’s Men

By Orin Davidson

It will be serious business for the USA Guyana team when they touch down in Guyana for their three-match series against the national team.

Just off a disappointing campaign in the West Indies limited overs KFC championship, the Guyana Cricket Board is ready to repair their team's dented pride.

As a result they have named a strong squad to oppose USA Guyana in their two 40 overs and one Twenty/20 clash beginning November 30.

The squad will be captained by stand-in Guyana captain Narsingh Deonarine and also includes prolific opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon, whose fine batting was the only bright spot in Guyana’s loss to eventual champions Jamaica in the KFC semi-final.

Fans will be pleased to learn the selectors have finally given a break to exciting young batsman, the former West Indies Under-19 player Gajanand Singh. He has been touted for great things after spectacular displays for Guyana in the 2005 West Indies Under-19 championship It earned him a place in the West Indies team for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka where he earned a reputation as a big hitter in the middle order.

Singh will join the already established Leon Johnson, who made his limited overs debut for Guyana in the KFC Cup after captaining the said West Indies Under-19 World Cup team.

Eusan Crandon, the Stanford Twenty20 hero and his brother fast improving all-rounder Royston Crandon will also in the 12-man squad. So is seasoned leg spinner and former West Indies player Mahendra Nagamootoo who has overcome the surprising snub by county team Berbice for the upcoming Guyana Inter County series.

Lone KFC Cup centurion Travis Dowling and talented off spinner Zaheer Mohammed will also be on show.

Reon King and Neil McGarrell who were part of the Guyana KFC team, will don colors for USA Guyana who will be coming on strong under captain Steve Massiah and vice captain Lennox Cush.

The Twenty/20 clash is slated for the Guyana National Stadium at Providence on December 1 while the other two matches are on at the GCC ground Bourda on November 30 and the Albion Sports Complex in Berbice on December 4 respectively.

A number of non-cricket activities are included on the tour, the highlight being a Duck Curry competition organized by Kings Jewelry on December 2 at the Starlight Drive-In, Montrose East Coast Demerara.

The tour has received the full blessings of the Guyana
