2007 NYC
Mayor's Cup
The Inaugural New York City Mayor’s Cricket Cup got underway
two weekends ago and the excitement is building up, as teams vie for
the right to represent each of the five boroughs of New York City.
Three teams have
already qualified to represent the Boroughs of Queens, Manhattan and
Staten Island. Today’s scheduled matches will determine which
teams will represent the remaining two Boroughs – Bronx and
Brooklyn.
In Queens an XI
named after Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall is waiting
in the wings for its next opponent to be drawn, while Cosmos Sports
Club has gone through to represent Staten Island and Pak-America Cricket
Club to represent Manhattan.
Twenty-six teams
started the tournament two weeks ago. That group has since been reduced
to seven teams in the Twenty20 knockout tournament – a first
in the City of New York and organized by the New York Cricket Region
in conjunction with the New York City Parks and Recreation Departments
of each of the five Boroughs.
According to Regional Director Jefroy Morrishaw, the Parks Department
has been very supportive of the effort thus far, and he hopes that
the collaborative effort will establish a long-tern relationship with
the City’s Parks departments.
Brooklyn Borough
Parks Commissioner, a member of the Cricket hall of Fame in Connecticut,
has been very instrumental, along with several key personnel Parks
officials in reaching out to lend a hand with the logistics involved
in running the tournament, so far.
